Purulent surgery
The Department of Purulent Surgery is a specialized unit that provides diagnostics, surgical treatment and long-term care for patients with complex infectious diseases. It treats a wide range of complex infections that affect soft tissues, bones, joints and internal organs. In many cases, these are life-threatening conditions that require urgent qualified and complex treatment.
A history of leadership and innovation
Our department was founded in 1979 and is currently not only one of the oldest, but also the only specialized department of purulent surgery in Georgia, which has no analogues in most countries of the world. Over the years, we have established ourselves as a national center for the management of complex septic cases and have introduced several innovative methods of treatment in this field. The department has made a great contribution to the treatment of sepsis and the development of the field by studying various experimental methods (barotherapy, xenospleen, treatment of purulent peritonitis using lightning, etc.), which demonstrates our contribution to the development of surgical science.
What are we treating?
Our team treats a wide range of diseases, including:
- Diabetic foot infections and gangrene
- Necrotizing soft tissue infections (necrotizing fasciitis, necrotizing cellulitis)
- Osteomyelitis and septic arthritis
- Infected wounds and postoperative infections at the surgical site
- Abscesses, phlegmons, carbuncles, deep infections and post-injection purulent processes
- Infected implants and prostheses
- Purulent hidradenitis
- Infected pilonidal cyst
- Paraproctitis
- Ulcers and fistulas
- Treatment of complex wounds using vacuum therapy
We also treat patients with recurrent infections. We are often referred to patients whose traditional treatment methods have not yielded results.
