Full plethysmography - the most accurate lung function study

If you have shortness of breath, chronic cough, difficulty breathing, or other respiratory symptoms, you may need a pulmonary function test . Bochorishvili Clinic offers whole body plethysmography , the gold standard for assessing lung function.

What is full plethysmography?

Whole body plethysmography (also known as body plethysmography or "body box" ) is a highly accurate method of pulmonary function testing used to determine lung volumes and airway resistance.
Unlike other studies, plethysmography measures not only the amount of air exhaled from the lungs, but also the amount of air remaining in the lungs - including air in poorly ventilated areas, which is often not measured by other methods.

How is plethysmography performed?

The research process is simple and comfortable:
  1. Entering the cabin - the patient will be placed in a special airtight, transparent cabin (Body Box).
  2. Breathing maneuvers - As directed by the doctor, the patient performs simple breathing exercises: calm breathing, deep inhalation/exhalation, rapid breathing maneuvers.
  3. Data recording - The device automatically measures airflow, pressure changes, and lung volumes.
Procedure:

✅ Non-invasive
✅ Painless
✅ Safe
✅ Lasts only 15-20 minutes

What does plethysmography measure?

Spirometry

Indicator Definition
FVC Forced vital capacity
FEV1 Forced expiratory volume in 1 second
FEV1/FVC The main indicator of obstruction
FEF 25–75% Average expiratory flow
PEF Peak expiratory flow

Lung volumes (body plethysmography)

Indicator Definition
TLC Total lung capacity
RV Residual volume
FRC / TGV Air after a normal exhalation
Raw Airway resistance
Gaw Airway patency
DLCO Lung diffusion capacity

Who needs a pulmonary function test?

According to symptoms
If you have any of the following symptoms, consultation and examination are necessary:

🫁 Shortness of breath (dyspnea) - especially during physical exertion

😮‍💨 Difficulty breathing - inhaling or exhaling
🤧 Chronic or recurrent cough
🔊 Noisy breathing (whistling, stridor)
💨 Feeling of shortness of breath
🫀 Chest tightness, pain, or burning
💪 Decreased ability to work
🤧 Chronic runny nose

Risk groups
  • Smokers over 40 - Early detection of COPD
  • Patients with genetic risk factors
  • Persons exposed to occupational exposures (dust, chemicals, gases)

What diseases does plethysmography detect?

Full plethysmography is used to diagnose and monitor the following conditions:

Obstructive diseases

  • Bronchial asthma - monitoring of bronchial obstruction
  • COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) - Assessment of Disease Severity
  • Upper airway obstruction

Restrictive diseases

  • Interstitial lung diseases
  • Neuromuscular pathologies (affecting breathing)

Gas exchange disorders

  • Hypoxemia (low oxygen levels in the blood)
  • Hypercapnia (high CO₂ levels)

Clinical solutions

  • Before surgery - assessment of surgical risk
  • Evaluation of treatment effectiveness
  • Comprehensive assessment of the patient's physical status
